HEALTH & SAFETY

Students who are feeling unwell need to tell their class teacher or the teacher on yard duty. After any required first aid, if appropriate, the student will be sent to the front office. The school support officer with first aid training will assess the situation. If the student is not well enough to return to class, the school staff will contact parents/caregivers or the nominated emergency contact. Students waiting to be collected use the designated sick room. In cases of emergency an ambulance will be called. The action plan for students with an individual health care plan will be followed. In emergency situations an ambulance will be called. It is advisable for families to have ambulance cover or school insurance for their child/ren.

  • Illness

If children are unwell, please keep them home until they are feeling better. If a doctor has diagnosed an infectious disease, you are obligated to contact the school as soon as possible. Children who have been ill with an infectious disease must stay at home until they are fully recovered. The Information regarding days of exclusion is available from the front office. Teachers are not permitted to administer any medication. Contact the front office staff for full details regarding prescription medication.

  • Medication / Health Care Plans

A 'Health Support for families' is included in our school information packs. Click here to view a copy.

Please note: If your child has a health care need which could require first aid or special care, for example: asthma, epilepsy or seizures, diabetes, severe allergy (anaphylaxis), mental health issues, personal care support, special aids or equipment please notify the school. You will be required to collect a health care plan form from the school office for your doctor to complete.

We would also like to point out a few important points in this brochure in regard to student medication.

  • All medication needs to be prescribed by a doctor. This includes analgesics and other medication that can be bought over the counter.

Medication should be:

  • only sent if absolutely unavoidable. Medication that has to be taken three times per day can be taken before and after school, and before bedtime, and not come to school at all.

  • supplied if required as a daily dose (or, at most, a week's supply).

  • delivered in the original container, with the label from the pharmacy clearly visible. You can ask your pharmacist for a second, labelled container to keep the extra medication at home.

  • within the use-by-date.

  • come with a medication authority (We ask that if you are taking your child tot he doctor which you think may result in your child being prescribed medication, that you please collect a medication authority form from the school office or download here prior to your appointment.

A child should not take his or her first dose of a new medication at school in case of an allergic reaction.

The medication must be brought tot he school office by the student's parent/guardian on the first day or sent with a signed / dated letter from the parent /guardian (including student name, medication, dose and time).

All medication is to be delivered to the school office for safe storage. (The only exception is if students are prescribed medication that must be kept with them eg. Asthma Medication - where a health care plan is required).

We thank you for your support in assisting us with this procedure.

If you have any queries or you would like another copy of the above brochure please speak to the school office staff. Information is also available on the chess (child health and education support services) website www.chess.sa.edu.au

  • Head Lice Prevention Team

A Head Lice Prevention team was established in 1999 and is made up of a group of volunteer parents. The team conducts checks at times when a number of cases of head lice have been reported and students are deemed to be at risk. Families should check their own children weekly, as recommenced by the Health Commission.

Students must have written consent to be checked for head lice. Ongoing support and education is given to parents/caregivers whose child is affected, until the condition is resolved. Discretion and sensitivity are essential components of this successful program.

  • Extreme Weather

If the outside temperature is greater than 37oC or heavy rain occurs, arrangements are made for students to be supervised in their classrooms during break times.

  • Leaving the School Grounds

Parents who need their children to leave the school grounds at any time during the school day must send a note to the child's teacher. Children must be signed out at the Front Office by a parent/caregiver on each occasion. They will be given an Early Dismissal Advice Note to give to the class teacher when collecting the child from the class.

  • Insurance

For Insurance information please deal directly with any Company of your choice. The school does not arrange insurance and does not have a preferred supplier.

  • Volunteers

Anytime volunteers come into the school to assist and stay for a period of time greater than 15minutes, they must sign the Volunteers Log Book in the Front Office. This log book enables the school to account for people in times of emergency such as fire. Volunteers are asked to sign in when they start work within the school and sign out when they leave. To help both students and staff identify volunteers from the outset, they will be issued with a volunteer badge when they sign in.

  • Excursions

Excursions may be arranged to complement aspects of the curriculum. In the majority of cases students will be issued with a tax invoice and consent form. School uniform must be worn unless otherwise advised.

Parents and caregivers travelling to and from school are reminded that:

  • The railway line is still in use at various times of the day and night.

  • A 25 km/h speed limit exists at the intersection of Magnolia and Menge Roads.

  • The speed limit anywhere in the school car park is 10 km/h or less.
