CURRICULUM

OUR AIM IS TO ENSURE THAT ALL CHILDREN ARE SUCCESSFUL LEARNERS

During their primary schooling, students from Reception to Year 7 will develop skills in eight curriculum areas:

  • The Arts
  • Design & Technology
  • English
  • Health & Physical Education
  • LOTE (Languages other than English) - Japanese
  • Maths
  • Science
  • Society & Environment

Teachers develop learning programs that offer students a diverse range of activities in order to develop skills, knowledge and experience in these curriculum areas.

At Tanunda Primary School we have specialist staff in Physical Education and Japanese.

The curriculum is further enhanced by excursions, visiting performers, specialist instructors and sporting activities.

  • Physical Education

Physical Education is an integral part of the school curriculum. Students are involved in a range of activities designed to develop health and fitness, co-ordination and specific sports skills. A weekly whole school walk is part of this program. Children are expected to participate in all lessons, sports days and swimming lessons. If your child is unable to participate for medical reasons, please write a note in the diary / communication book.

  • Dress Code

Students must be attired appropriately for an active lifestyle. They will need hats, sunscreen and correct footwear (no sandals).

  • Lunchtime Activities

Students are issued with sports cards at the start of the year. This allows them to borrow a range of equipment from the sports shed at recess and lunch times.

  • Sports Teams - House System

There are 4 House teams named after early pioneers of the Tanunda Area.

These are Angas (Red), Kavel (Blue), Menge (Green) and Light (Gold). Each year all students are allocated to a house team. As a general rule, family members are allocated to the same house team.

For 'house-based' sporting events, (eg. Sports Day, Swimming Carnival), children are encouraged to wear the colour of their house team. (Refer to comments in School Uniform section).

  • Swimming

Swimming lessons are conducted annually for all students in Reception to Year 6 and are a mandatory part of the school physical education curriculum. The lessons are held in week 7 of term 4 a the STARPLEX SWIMMING CENTRE, GAWLER. Transport and Pool entry costs invoiced to parents.

Parents must complete a consent and medical information form before children can attend.

For a number of years, an aquatics camp has been held for Year 7 students, at Port Vincent, at the same time.

A swimming carnival is held in Term 1 for year 4-7 students at the Tanunda Swimming Pool.

  • SAPSASA

South Australian Primary Schools Amateur Sports Association

Students attending Tanunda Primary School have the opportunity to participate in a number of SAPSASA sports depending upon age, year level, gender, ability, availability of coaches and interested numbers.

Tanunda Primary School's policy states that a student is only permitted to represent Barossa and Light SAPSASA in one summer and one winter carnival team (1-2 weeks duration).

Students are permitted to participate in as many representative teams (1 to 2 days duration) both for the Barossa and Light SAPSASA and Tanunda Primary as selected.

  • Parent/Caregiver Volunteers

During the year, parents/caregivers are invited to assist with transport, accompanying students on sports excursions, washing uniforms and helping with fundraising activities. If you would like to assist in any way, please see the PE Co-ordinator or the staff.

  • Library

The Library is open each day from 8.30 am - 3.45 pm. Children are able to borrow and return books before and after school, during lunch and during library lessons. Parents are most welcome to accompany their children when they visit the library.

  • Care of Books

A clearly named cloth or vinyl bag (approx 40cm x 50cm) would really assist younger children with protecting their books from damage when borrowing. If a book is accidentally damaged in any way, please return it to the library for repair.

  • Borrowing Books

Children are taught to scan their books when returning or borrowing. If this is confusing in any way please let us know.

  • Library Volunteers

There are times, especially early in the year, when we have many books to cover. If you have some time to spare, please come and see us. We would be most grateful for some help!

  • Book Club

During the year children receive catalogues of books from Ashton Scholastic. Points are allocated to the school based on the number of items purchased. These points then translate into additional resources for our library.
